At the leather exhibition last time, that Korean client kept telling my employer that I am good at selling products even though I am just a Chinese Interpreter and ended up buying many samples from our company. And in this article, I’d like to share another story from the lighting expo as an English to Chinese translator, providing insights into Chinese interpreter services.

A Dubai client approached our booth asking for my WeChat, then remarked, “You are so cute.” I replied with, “Thanks, you’re handsome too.” Today, a Pakistani customer insisted on giving me a personal business card, not for the company, and even took a photo with me. I was quite awkward, hah.

And speaking of dinner with Mr. Dumitru tonight, it was rather a coincidence. He happened to visit our booth to check out PCBA, and we struck up a conversation. He seemed quite keen on chatting with me. Later, he asked for my phone number and suggested having dinner together. He is a complete stranger to me, and we only had a chat around our booth for less than 10 minutes.

Despite my role is just a Chinese interpreter from the booth . He appeared friendly to me , so I gave him my Hong Kong number. I finished work at 3:00 P.M., and he made a phone call to me, telling me to meet him at J.Steward Lockhat near the Wan Chai Bridge. I said, “Sure, why not?”

This senior gentleman came to pick me up, even helped carry my luggage along the way. I felt a bit touched. He’s probably in his 60s but carries himself with gentlemanly grace. He stayed at the Wharney Guangdong Hotel Hong Kong. I waited for him in the lobby, and he suggested a Thai restaurant on Hennessy Road.

I said, “Ha ha, the restaurant is located in No. 366! Right?” He replied, “Don’t you know what’s good to eat in Hong Kong? Seems like you’re quite familiar.” I chuckled inwardly, thinking, “We’ve been to that place countless times for our gatherings,” but didn’t mention it.

Not wanting to walk all the way to 366, I randomly picked a European restaurant on Hennessy Road. He mentioned his fondness for prawns, while I declared my love for foie gras. We ordered our meals and engaged in lively conversation, with Mr. Dumitru being quite talkative. I mainly played the role of listener as he regaled me with tales of his blissful family life—a understanding wife, two sons happily married with children, all successful. He expressed contentment with his current lifestyle.

Then, we delved into discussions about the Crimean referendum, the Arab Spring, and how Americans are often so proud, etc. As an English to Chinese translator, it is a must that we read extensively.There are various occasions that an interpreter need to talk to make talk climate cheerful.

We also touched upon World War II, the Pearl Harbor incident. He remarked, “Well, didn’t expect you, a young lady, to know quite a bit after all, huh?” Actually, that’s all I know about history and politics, haha. Dinner concluded, feeling obliged to treat him to dessert, I bought two fruit tarts from the adjacent shop. Being Romanian, his English wasn’t fluent, but miraculously, I managed to understand most of what he said. Later, he hailed a taxi to drop me off at Hung Hom.

Upon my return to Shenzhen, he even called to ensure I arrived home safely, suggesting I read Le Petit Prince. Such encounters with strangers, treating me to dinner and wishing me well, are what make life so remarkable. It is one of the best moments in life from my work.

The English to Chinese translator job should have been more interesting if people put focus on a deep human connection level.

It really shows that being an English to Chinese translator is more than just translating words; it's about making real connections with people from all different walks of life. The interpreter found these interactions really rewarding, adding a whole new layer to their job. It's not just about language; it's also about connecting with others on a deep, human level.
