This time, working as an English Chinese translator at the Baby Products Fair in Wan Chai was truly an exhilarating experience! This translation project was a collaboration with Assuna Translation Agency for Hong Kong exhibition.

The exhibition mainly featured a Korean company showcasing its baby products. Many of the world’s high-quality baby home products are manufactured in Korea. For this event, I served as the interpreter for Company A, the most renowned producer of baby crawling mats in Korea. When Korean mothers think of crawling mats, A is the first brand that comes to their mind.

There were four people in our booth: a Chinese-Korean lady, a Korean man, and another female interpreter working alongside me. The two supervisors from Company A were very professional and evidently experienced in their work. On the second day of the exhibition, the Korean-Chinese supervisor advised the other interpreter and me to be more proactive.

Then, that morning, I saw the other female interpreter become very enthusiastic and proactive. I realized that the Hong Hong translator had spent the first day familiarizing herself with the products, and once she was comfortable with them, her professional interpretation and customer interaction skills were completely unveiled.

This was my first time collaborating with the other interpreter, and I was totally impressed by her competence. Her enthusiasm motivated me, and I also became very passionate about my work. As a result, more and more foreign customers chose to consult me about the products.

Over those two days, we received many customer contacts and orders, making me realize how rewarding interpretation work can be. During those few days, I assisted countless international customers from different countries including Turkey, Canada, Indonesia, Singapore, the United States, and Russia. Engaging with people from around the world, each with different accents, conversational styles, and cultures, significantly broadened my horizons.

To sum up, this business interpretation experience has helped me progress a lot, and I hope to have more opportunities to work with Assuna Translation Agency in the future.

Feedback 2: Review of the Hong Kong Toy Exhibition Interpreter

1.Prepare well before working at the show

After contacting with my client, I understood all the terminology, and imagined the difficulties I would encounter in the next few days. Besides I found out the route that was available for me to arrive to Wan Chai,Hong Kong Exhibition Center on time. The personal image was also significant, so I made sure that I was in a well suit. In general a satisfied preparation could boost my confidence in this challenging job.

2.Positive service attitude

A short term exhibition requires a highly enthusiasm in working. Initially the punctuality shown my optimistic attitude to this job, revealing my determination to accomplish the task and attaining the trust from my employer. Secondly when I took a positive attitude towards work, and kept a warm smile on my face, the charm would attract more potential clients on the exhibition. This is of necessity for a professional exhibition interpreter.

3.Efficient communication and instant feedback

Although I was an interpreter major in English, I confronted with more languages that I could imagine before. In this fair, there were more Korean and Japanese costumers, who didn’t have the capability in speaking both English and Chinese, or even didn’t hire a following interpreter with them.

At first, I tried to use simple English words to express my ideas, but they still could not understand what I meant. Then I tried to use my body languages to tell them, which began to work. What’s more, I kept smile to the Korean and Japanese customers and gave an instant feedback for my boss, sparing my efforts to achieve an efficient communication between language gap.

It was an excellent experience for my career, inspiring me to solve the emergence in a limited period, and maintained a rational mind simultaneously.

Feedback 3: Interpretation Experience Sharing in HK Show

From January 7th to 10th, 2019, I served as an English Chinese translator for the Baby Products Fair at the Convention and Exhibition Centre in Wan Chai for four days, providing interpretation services in Mandarin, English, and Cantonese. I gained many valuable insights during this experience, which have been listed below:

1.The Korean boss of the company I served was exceptionally kind, and having grown up in Africa, his English proficiency was superb! Working alongside him made me feel very grounded and motivating. Since his English was nearly at the level of a native speaker, it also helped improve my own English. He even taught me a few interesting words that are not commonly used. I am deeply grateful to him!

2.Smiles can attract customers, while professionalism and sincerity can retain their purchasing desire.

3.The young man I worked with was extremely diligent and professional. Over the four days, I was deeply impressed by his professionalism and sincerity towards customers. It was a great privilege to work alongside such an individual!

I really hope to have such opportunities again in the future. Not only does interpretation work facilitate communication between businesses and customers, but it can also enhance my own communication skills. I am especially grateful for providing me with this valuable opportunity.

Feedback 4 From English Chinese Translator

Hong KONG exhibition translator

During tonight’s work as a consecutive interpreter for an annual meeting, unexpected situations arose such as impromptu speakers and poor on-site audio quality, leading to the need for improvement in my interpretation accuracy. Thanks to the on-site coordinators and Assuna for their understanding, the atmosphere throughout the event remained lively.

Comparatively, simultaneous interpreters faced even greater challenges, as there were no soundproof booths available, and the main audience was situated in areas with significant background noise, thereby increasing the difficulty of their work. But both simultaneous interpreters worked tirelessly and showed their professionalism. Also, Assuna, busy with project coordination, also faced great challenges, and I really appreciate her understanding.

Summarize：

It's clear that exhibition interpreters in Hong Kong need not only be skilled in their language abilities but also proactive in their approach. Here we can also see how crucial thorough preparation is for interpreters. Before the Toy Exhibition, one interpreter studied all relevant terminology and planned logistics meticulously. Being well-prepared boosted their confidence and improved their performance at the event.

As interpreters ,we must be capable of dealing with unexpected challenges, like poor audio quality at an annual meeting. It shows the importance to a qualified interpreter of being adaptable and maintaining high standards of accuracy, despite difficulties. From the sharing , we can understand the complexities and the rewarding nature of being an exhibition interpreter in Hong Kong.
