On the afternoon of August 30th, upon seeing the Chinese language translator job, I immediately contacted Assuna. Her response was prompt, and I am grateful for her trust in choosing me as the interpreter and presenting my credentials to the client.
After confirming my assignment, I prepared the relevant materials for the company that evening. I gathered information about the company’s updates and products from various sources such as WeChat public platform, news reports, and its official website. Additionally, I also compiled translation terminology specific to the industry and performed sight interpretation on related documents to ensure continuity in interpretation during communication.
On August 31st, I arrived at the venue half an hour early, around 4:30 PM, and began to prepare my business translation task in the following day, familiarizing myself with the surroundings.
The scale of the company’s meeting was substantial. My role was to assist the company’s CEO in negotiations with a foreign friend. After coordinating with the CEO, I realized that my main responsibility was facilitating business discussions, with less emphasis on detailed knowledge of the company’s products. Nonetheless, I believe thorough preparation can mitigate unforeseen circumstances.
Although the foreign participant arrived later than scheduled, the work proceeded smoothly. I assisted the CEO in contacting the foreign party via phone and text messages, facilitated their hotel check-in, and promptly relayed updates to the CEO. Initially, there were discussions about extending the meeting duration, but ultimately, it concluded as planned.
The business discussion between the two parties revolved around some collaborative projects, with specific details being confidential. The interpretation was not so difficult, but it required quick response times, as most of the communication was done through interpretation without note-taking. Understanding the speaker’s intent before interpreting was crucial. Moreover, my background in management studies made it relatively easy for me to grasp and utilize business vocabulary.
Overall, the interpretation work went smoothly. Apart from being extra cautious about personal safety, especially in light of recent incidents with ride-hailing services like Didi, there weren’t any other major concerns.
I appreciate Assuna for a pleasant first-time collaboration and look forward to more opportunities to work together in the future!
First of all, I would like to thank Assuna for choosing me as the certified interpreter for this Suzhou Interpretation Project. Our cooperation has always been pleasing. Assuna would always give me detailed information and abundant background materials. Before the interpretation, she would arrange our itinerary carefully. So I have always been confident and passionate when engaging in interpretation work.
The clients for this time were two experts from Safedeck, a British century-old company that is dedicated to the production of floors and doors.
Before the English to Chinese interpretation, I did a lot of preparatory work. For example, I looked through our clients’ websites, noted down some technical terms like GRP and FRP. I would always meet such terms during each interpretation work. I think it is very important for professional interpreters and translators to accumulate and recite terms. In this way, we can become the expert in specific area one day.
The interpretation started at 8:30. Since the work began early in the morning, I would usually check the transportation information and make arrangements. Leaving a good impression to clients is important: we should be punctual at all times.
Me, along with our British clients, visited the factories in Nantong, Huzhou, Wuxi, and Suzhou. These factories mainly produce compound materials and export them to foreign countries. During the meeting, the foreign guests asked the providers about the order status, as well as the price and features of new products. They carefully visited the production lines and proposed some suggestions. They also expressed that the Chinese government has placed high environmental protection requirements recently. And China has noticed that the structural reform is critical and we should eliminate high pollution enterprises.
Through the three days of interpretation and factory visits, our clients were satisfied with us. They praised our hospitality and the development of our traditional and modern culture. They look forward to their next visit to China.
