About Certified Interpreter Dressing Code Events: Ten Years Ago vs. Recent Times

Certified interpreter dressing code is something the interpreter must know, sometimes they even impact the client’s choice

As interpreters, we will attend various business meetings. It is important to know something about certified interpreter dressing code in these occasions.

No one knows everything from the very early beginning. Proper dress code or you can say, proper dressing is always necessary. I boast more than 10 years interpretation experience and here is a story i learned from my profession.

I got an urgent task that a business interpreter in Shenzhen was needed. When I reached the site and the great job was done. When we had free chat, the client told me they booked another interpreter on the previous day, buy then they decided to switch her to me because that lady really loves shorts. Even in business occasions, she wears short, which was obviously not proper. This shows the necessity of proper dress in business meetings.

The first and second images were taken in 2012 and 2013, back when I had just started my career in interpreting for about one or two years.

At that time ,I was such a junior that I almost knew nothing about dress code. I chose whatever I like during those days. I favor flower patters myself and I always dress in flower patterns , or sometimes I dress animal dot pattern.

Personally, I love colorful clothes, but I try to keep it simple when it comes to interpretation events. So, I opted for a black floral outfit! My ignorance of dress code gave me the wrong courage.

The occasion where I wore a pink floral dress was when I was showing overseas clients around a university town, acting as their E-C guide interpreter. These clients were introduced to me by the Australian Consulate in Shenzhen.

After that assignment, the Australian Consulate became a long-term client for our agency. These two overseas professors praised me, their young guide in Shenzhen (I was only 26 at the time), describing me as friendly, humorous, and intelligent.

It was not very formal occasion, so dressing in small flower pattern was not so wrong. It was summer and the main purpose is to take my guest a Shenzhen tour, showing them as much as possible about Shenzhen. Ten years has passed since i served as a tour guide myself in Shenzhen. I missed those days.

Collaborate with the Regular Clients

After that, the Australian Consulate continued to collaborate with me, turning to me for both major events and minor matters. They also recommended me to the Canadian Consulate, and later, to colleagues at the Israeli Consulate. This way, I built up a client base across various consulates. I think this is more about communication skills and fast response.

I started my interpretation career as a Shenzhen Interpreter. Now I become a business owner , and we offer language support to different clients worldwide. I saw the business growing during the last 14 years, and a growing number of young fresh graduates plunged into this business. Only those who love this job can do the job well.

That’s how I can accumulate my client base gradually. Whenever I’m involved, our cooperation with clients always spans a minimum of ten years.

I advocate strong responsibility and excellent communication skills if you wanna be a good interpreter. Participation of some public speech platform is also a must where you can build your confidence. Interpretation needs confidence, this is something others cannot apprehend if they are not in this business.

Sorry, I digress. Let’s get back to the certified interpreter dressing code. Even now, when it comes to dressing for business interpreting events, I still prefer floral patterns.

I have my own style when it comes to dressing, so don’t expect me to wear black, white, or gray. I particularly like YCH suits for their high-end feel. Even if I’m just doing interpreting at a trade show for a day, I must show my confidence through my dressing.

Now in my closet, I have dozens of suit. More and more occasions I attend is business meeting. I prepare many suite and plain color shirt for formal site. I guess most girls love shopping, and they find they they are always in need of a new dress.

Industry shift will also impact the future of translation, but we need to be always positive

Now, clients either address me as Assuna or Manager Song. I’m no longer the young girl from back then, but actually, I don’t personally handle as much translation work anymore, especially since translation business in Shenzhen isn’t as bustling.

You can see or feel the clear shift or industry from Shenzhen to some Southeast Asian countries. The demand of Shenzhen interpreters are less and less. AI made tremendous development during the last two years and we witnessed more and more people make use of AI. Needless to say, translation career is in danger, but what doesn’t ? We must always take a positive look towards the future.
